I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order and a quorum was established with no absences.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: January 20, 2022
A motion was made by Commissioner Brown approving the minutes listed above and it was seconded by
Commissioner Wanzer. The motion passed.
III. APPROVAL OF ABSENCES: Kathleen De La Garza
A motion was made by Commissioner Brown approving the absence listed above and it was seconded by Vice
Chairman Freeman. The motion passed.
IV. PUBLIC COMMENT — Sylvia Budd at 805 Park Avenue addressed the Commission and stated she and her
husband are currently making repairs to their home which is over 100 years old. She is interested in a possible
historic landmark for this address. Staff concluded the address is included in the historic survey and will research
the address further.
V. BRIEFING: Ocean Drive Sites

Ms. Nixon -Mendez mentioned that 14 sites are included in the historical survey and briefly went over some
significant sites which warrant consideration. She provided aerial photos of the sites from Google Earth. She
consulted with the Texas Historic Commission regarding a national register district for this area and gave information
on this process. She discussed some issues with the current ordinance regarding designations and stay of
demolitions. She also went over the initiation process including notifying the property owner of the impacts of a
designation. After the presentation, the floor was opened for Commissioner comments/questions.
VI. HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICER'S REPORT — Nina Nixon -Mendez
1) Historic Preservation Plan update: To be placed on the City Council agenda in March for consideration.
2) National Preservation Month update: Procedures for the Instagram Photo Contest are underway (rules,
prizes, judges, etc.) Winner's photos will be displayed at the La Retama public library. "Behind the Scenes"
tours are still being discussed. The Museum of Science and History is currently working on a "Then & Now"
exhibit for the McGregor series with a Spring release. She will reach out to "Enjoy Corpus Christi Tours" for
possible activities.; nothing new to report on Heritage Park activities.
3) Annual Preservation Awards — Previous Recipients:
• 2019
Person — Anita Eisenhower (continuous work in local historic preservation)
Building — Bay Jewel (constructed in 1929 and renovated after vacant for 30 years)
• 2020
Building — Iglesia NI Cristo Church (vacant for 12 years and then renovated)
Person — Karen Howden (work on Old Bayview Cemetery)
• 2021
Building — Nueces Brewing Company (recent rehabilitation)
Organization — Downtown Management District's Main Street Program
4) American World War II Heritage City nomination (National Park Service): Corpus Christi would be a good
candidate for a nomination for contribution and preservation. She said that consideration could be extended
to other close cities that were interconnected by the war.
Ms. Nixon -Mendez also updated the Commission on newly appointed commissioners.
