V. BRIEFING: Historic Preservation Plan
Nina Nixon-Mendez, Assistant Director, began the briefing with information on the current state of historic
preservation in the City. As of 2021, there have been 40 historic designations. The City of Corpus Christi embarked
on the development of an action-oriented community-wide Historic Preservation Plan in Fall 2020. This plan builds
upon the City’s original 1976 Historic Preservation Plan and subsequent updates and expands on those activities
by honoring Corpus Christi’s past, identifying the community’s preservation goals, and providing a roadmap the City
can follow to achieve the desired outcomes. She recited the Plans vision statement:
“By 2030, historic preservation in Corpus Christi will support a vibrant, multicultural community enjoyed by
residents and visitors alike, with a thriving downtown, diversified economy, updated infrastructure, and
equitable investment in new and legacy neighborhoods.”
Next, Ms. Nixon-Mendez went over the Goals (3) and Strategies (16) of the Plan. She summarized the community
engagement which included three public workshops, a community survey and stakeholder outreach. A draft of the
Plan was posted on the website in June 2021 for community review. She listed the public hearings and
recommendations of the Plan with the Landmark Commission and Planning Commission recommending approval.
The first City Council public hearing took place on December 7, 2021, with final adoption on June 14, 2022.

VI. HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICER REPORT: Ocean Drive Subcommittee
Ms. Nixon-Mendez stated that a venue for the Committee is being worked out as an initial bid to tour the Ada
Wilson house does not seem likely. She suggested to conduct the meeting in the 6th floor conference room of City
Hall sometime in August. The Committee will be brainstorming ideas on the historic nature of properties along
Ocean Drive; ideas on how to engage this community in preservation efforts. Staff will look into reserving the
conference room for the meeting.
VII. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
• Briefing on Old Bayview Cemetery (Friends of Old Bayview Cemetery Association)
• Briefing on Littles-Martin Home and Old Bayview Cemetery (Parks and Recreation Department)
