Blackmon Oomsissioners3 Patrick J Dunne Dr, Po Jimenez, Jr. Ken McDaniel Ronnie Sizemore Wm, R. Wallace City Manager Herbert W. Whitney Melt City Attorney Robert young City Secretary T. Ray Xring Mayor McIver Furman called the special meeting to order and announced the purpose of the meeting to consider proposed street name changes and the naming of unnamed streets in the Clarkwood, Annaville and Calallen areae, City Manager Whitney explained that as a result of annexation there are in existence approximately 21 streets in the Clarkwood, Annaville and Calallen areas having duplicate names with other streets in Corpus Christi, and has also acquired several unnamed streets or roads located in these areas; that a communication has been received from Postmaster Otis Eo Bowers announcing that the present Post Offices in these areas will become classified finance stations of the Corpus Christi Post Office effective November 20, 1965, and that on that date City delivery service will be extended to the abovemantioned areas providing each residence or business has a correct street name and number, Mr. Whitney further stated that 89 letters have been mailed out which stated that if for any reason the proposed name was not acceptable, residents may submit another name providing it represented the choice of the majority of the residents on the street and not a duplication or of similar sound to an existing street. Mayor Furman recognized Mr, Tony Figueroa, and his family, 1826 Morales, who were present in connection with changing the name of First Street in Calallen, Mso Figueroa explained that his father, Gerardo Figueroa, is now 105 years old and was an earlier settler in the Calallen area; he asked that First Street, or some other street in the area, be named for him to recognize the early Latin Americans of that area, The Council agreed that the section of First Street located from Leopard Street East to Nueces River be named"Figueroa Street." Mr, and Mrs. Eo Lo Bearden appeared in connection with the proposed change of Hunter Lane to "Douglas". They stated that they owned a business located at Minutes Special Council Meeting November 178 1965 - 7:30 p.m. Page 2 the corner of Hunter Lane and Hunter Roads and that if the name is changed it will tremendously hurt their business. City Manager Whitney read a communication from Mrs. J. B. Hunter of Quenados Texas, stating that J. B. Hunter had given the land to the State and County many years ago; that the street bears his names and that she feels that it should remain 'Hunter Lane." A communication was also received from D. W. Grant suggesting that that part of Hunter Road which lies south of Highway 9 and extending north of Highway 9, be named "Thew Road" in honor of H. A. Rhew, a prominent resident of Corpus Christie now deceased, instead of the proposed change to "Dorris Lane" which has no particular meaning to this area of Corpus Christi. Mayor Pro Tem Blackmon suggested that instead of using the suggested name "Douglas," that the unnamed street extending Northwest from Hunter Road to Viola Road be named "Bearden Drive," to which Mrs and Mrs. Bearden and the Council agreed. It was decided that Hunter Lane from Donigan Lane West to Clarkwood Road be named "Sedwick Road"; that Hunter Road between Sedwick Road and Bearden Drive be named 'Thew Road"; and that Hunter Road, North from Leopard to Waiver Road remain "Hunter Road," Mr. Leland Ross, owner of property and developer in River Forest Addition, appeared and made alternate suggestions for proposed changes in this area. City Manager Whitney read a communication from Mrs. Murray Hill, Box 92, Calallen, suggesting that instead of the recommended name "Lindgreen Streets" that Third Street in Calallen be named "Hill" or 'budge" after Judge Murray Hill. It was determined that both these names were too similar in sound to other streets in the City, and it was agreeable to both Mr. Ross and the Council that instead of Changing Third Street and its extensions Mesquite Trail, to "Lindgreen," as was recommended; that Third Streets from Leopard Street Northeast to Railroad Avenue, be named "Bast Buckhorn Drive"; and Third Street from Leopard Southwest to deadend, be named "West Buckhorn Drive." Dr. Jimenez departed the meeting at this time. In connection with the proposed change of Yucca Trail in River Forest Addition to "Century Trail," a communication was noted from Mr. F. J. Kelly and Mr. Robert Burke, suggesting that Yucca Trail be named "Songbird Trail." Minutes Special Council Meeting November 17. 1965 - 730 p.m. Page 3 Mr. Ross conducted a telephone poll of several residents, including Mr. Kelly and Mr. Burke, and it was agreed that Moon River Trail" would be acceptable, The Council agreed, and Yucca Trail in River Forest Addition was named "Moon River Trail." Written communications were also received from Mrs. Daniel Kilgore, Mrs. B..J. Brumley and Mr. O. H. Davis, suggesting that Clark Avenue in Clarkwood not be named "Isensee" as recommended, because of the difficulty in spelling and pro- nounciation, and suggested that the street be named "Iris." Another communication was received in connection with Clark Avenue from Mrs. Byerley, in which she stated she is 83 years of age, has lived on this street for 54 years. and requested that Clark Avenue be named "Byerley Avenue." The Council agreed that Clark Avenue in Clarkwood should be named "Iris Avenue." In connection with the change of Sunset Trail in River Forest Addition, a communication was read from Mrs. C. R. deLay requesting that Sunset Trail be changed to "Rivercrest Trail" instead of the recommended change to "Northwest Trail." It was decided by the Council that because of the similarity of "Rivercrest Trail" to other streets in the area, that Sunset Trail be designated "Northwest Trail." No other residents appeared to be heard in connection with the remaining recommended changes of street names in the Clarkwood, Annaville and Calallen areas, and the public hearing was closed.
