COMMISSIONERS COURT ROOM
August 12, 1969, 11:00 a.m.
Present were County Judge Noah Kennedy; County Commissioners Barnes, Ortiz, McKenzie,
and Gallagher; County Auditor Ramfield; Secretary of the Court Minerva Leal; Mayor Jack Blackmon;
Commissioners Sizemore, Bradley, McDaniel, and de Ases; City Manager Townsend, Assistant City
Attorney Coffin; and City Secretary Kring.
Commissioner Barnes moved, seconded by Sizemore and passed, that Richard King, C. Arthur
Eggleston, and R. E. Sallee be reappointed as Members of the Nueces County Navigation Com-
mission for two year terms expiring 1/1/71, or until their successors are elected and qualified.
Mayor Blackmon suggested that the matter of fire protection for the port and industrial area
be discussed for the purpose of determining the responsibility for fire protection for the area. He
requested that City Manager Townsend outline the present status and offer pertinent suggestions.
Mr. Townsend explained that the matter had been discussed at various times in the past
decade, but that a definite and fixed policy had not been established, and suggested that it should
be, in order to provide proper protection for the area. He stated that minor fires by comparison as
to what could occur, services had been provided by cooperative effort of the Terminal Fire Company,
Annaville Fire Department and City Fire Department. He emphasized that in his opinion definite
and fixed responsibility of leadership should be determined and established.
County Judge Kennedy suggested that perhaps a subcommittee, representing the different
government entities should be appointed to work out the details of such an agreement.
The proposal was acceptable and it was agreed that the various governmental entities would
appoint members representing the respective agencies at an early date.
