AMENDING AN ORDINANCE BEING ORDINANCE NO.
1688 RECORDED IN VOLUME 13, PAGE 22, OF THE
ORDINANCE AND RESOLUTION RECORDS OF THE CITY
OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, ENTITLED "AN ORDI-
NANCE REGULATING AND LICENSING TAXICABS,
CHAUFFEURS OF TAXICABS AND TAXICAB STANDS; PRO-
VIDING FOR REVOCATION OF LICENSES; DEFINING
CERTAIN TERMS; PROVIDING FOR PUBLIC LIABILITY
INSURANCE POLICIES OR DEPOSIT OF CASH OR SEC-
URITIES; PROVIDING LICENSE FEES; CREATING THE
OFFICE OF INSrECTOx OF TAXICABS u F THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI AND PRESCRIBING HIS DUTIES; PRO-
VIDING A PENALTY, AND THE METHOD OF PROSECUTING
INDIVIDUALS AND OTHERS FOR VIOLATING THIS
ORDINANCE; ENACTING THE NECESSARY PROVISIONS
INCIDENT TO THE OBJECT AND PURPOSE OF THIS
ORDINANCE YMTHER MENTIONED IN DETAIL IN THE
CAPTION OR NOT; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES IN
CONFLICT HEREWITH; AND CONTAINING A SAVING
CLAUSE; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY" AND DEC-
LARING AN EMERGENCY.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That Section 1 of said Ordinance No. 1688 passed and
approved by the City Council on the 20th day of June, 1944, is hereby
amended by adding in said Section,after Sub- section(i), Sub - section {j)
which Sub- section(j )shall be and read as follows, to- Merit:
(j) The term "for hire" as used in Section 1(c) shall mean
for money or other thing of value, gratuities, tips and free will offer-
ings, whether paid directly or indirectly as compensation or considera-
tion for services rendered.
SECTION 2. This ordinance shall be cumulative of Ordinance No. 1688
passed and approved by the City Council on June 20, 1944.
SECTION 3. The fact that the proper regulation of motor vehicles
operating over the streets in the City of Corpus Christi is essential to
the welfare of the citizens and the fact that this ordinance is necessary
to obtain sufficient regulation of such motor vehicles operating within
the city limits creates a public emergency and an imperative public necessity
requiring the suspension of the Charter rule that no ordinance or resolu-
tion shall be passed finally on the date of its introduction, and that

said ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings of
the City Council and the Mayor having declared that such emergency and
imperative public necessity exist, and requested that said Charter rule
be suspended, and that this ordinance be passed finally on the date of
its introduction, and that this ordinance take effect and be in full
force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO ORDAINED.

Gentlemen:
For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the
foregoing Ordinance, a public emergency and an imperative public
necessity exists for the suspension of the Charter rule or require-
ment that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the
date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or resolution shall
be read at three, several meetings of the City Council, I, there-
fore, hereby request that you suspend said charter rule or require-
ment and pass this ordinance finally on the date it is introduced,
or at the present meeting of the City Council.
