HomeMy WebLinkAbout02565 ORD - 07/26/1949AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE LEVY AND ASSESSMENT AND COLLEC- TION OF A LICENSE TAX OR OCCUPATION TAX UPON ALL PERSONS, FIRMS, CORPORATIONS OR ASSOCIATION OF PERSONS PffiLSUING OR ENGAGING IN ANY CALLING, OCCUPATION, PROFESSION, TRADE, VOCATION OR BUSI- NESS WITHIN THE CORPORATE LIMITS OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI AND ON WHICH A STATE LICENSE OR OCCUPATION TAX IS LEVIED AND ASSESSED OR COLLECTED; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT THEREWITH; KBERING IN EFFECT ALL LAWS NOT IN CONFLICT THERENITA; AND DECLARING AN M[ERGEICY.. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS. SECTION I: That there is hereby levied and assessed and shall be collected from every person, firm, corporation or association of persons pursuing or that may pursue within the corporate limits of the City of Corpus Christi any calling, occupation, profession, trade, vocation or business upon which a State license tax or occupation tax is levier] under the laws of the State of Texas a license or occupation tax equal to one -half of the said State tax. SUCTION II: That the license or occupation taxes levied by this ordinance shall be collected by the Assessor and Collector of Taxes of the City of Corpus Christi and shall be paid to that officer by each and every person, firm, corporation or association of persons before engaging in such calling, occupation, profession, trade, vocation or business. SECTION III: That any person, firm corporation, or association of persons pur- suing or engaging in the calling, occupation, profession, trade, vocation or business upon which such license tax or occupation tax is levied with- out having paid said license tax or occupation tax shall be guilty of a misdaneanor and upon conviction shall be fined in any sum not less than $10.00 or more than $200.00 and each day of so offending shall be and con- stitute a separate offense. a56s SECTION Ns That all ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict here- with be and the same are hereby repealed and that this ordinance be,in force and effect from and after its passage and publication as required by law, and insofar as this ordinance may be a re- enactment of any existing ordinance, such re- enacted ordinances or provisions thereof are hereby continued in full force and effect. SECTION V2 The fact that certain provisions of prior existing ordinances have been based on statutes of the State repealed since the date of the enactment of the ordinances, and the fact that said provisions are no longer in effect or in force creates a public emergency and imperative public necessity requiring a suspension of the Charter rule providing that no Ordinance or Resolution shall be passed finally on the day it is introduced, and that such ordinance or Resolution shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared that such public emergency and imperative necessity exists, and having requested that said Charter rule be suspended and that this Ordinance be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and that this Ordinance take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, it is so ordained.
