HomeMy WebLinkAbout02659 RES - 12/06/1949A RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING TEE ATTITUDE OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI ENCOURAGING THE ACQUISI- TIOS OF THE PLANT NOW UNDER TEMPORARY LEASE FOR THE USE AND BENEFIT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI ON A LONG TERM LEASE OR PERMANENT BASIS.) AND TO RECOGNIZE THE ADVANTAGE OF ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF A UNIVERSITY AT CORPUS CHRISTI, AND EXPRESSING THE ATTITUEE OF COOPERATION; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, The University of Corpus Christi is an established institute of higher learning for the use and benefit of the public in Son - oral and,espeoially, the youth of Corpus Christi, and that such institute is worthy of commendation; and WHEREAS, the plant now occupied by it is under temporary lease through assignment from the City of Corpus Christi, Lessee, and under a short term lease from the United States Navy, and the proper repair, maintenance, and use of said premises and improvements require a long term lease or per- manent arrangment which will justify the expenditure of private capital; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Corpus Christi are desirouacof con- tinuing said institute, The University of Corpus Christi, as a permanent institute of higher learning at Corpus Christi, and the City of Corpus Christi acting by and through its City Council desires to cooperate in se- curing the placing of said institute on a permanent basis: NOP7, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS; SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi does hereby approve the application of the University of Corpus Christi for the execution by the United States government of -a long term lease direct to the University of Corpus Christi or other permanent arraint for the more securely providing a plant for the maintenance of said institute, and has hereby approved such said application and endorses the efforts of the University of Corpus Christi to obtain such lease direct from the United States government, and hereby expresses the willingness of the City of Corpus Christi to cooperate in obtaining the said lease on soquisition of the land and prebises formerly lmown as Naval Air Technical Training Center of Corpus Christi. SECTION 2, The necessity for assisting and cooperating with the governing body of the University of Carpus Christi in the acquisition of its plant on a permanent basis from the United States government creates a public emergency and public imperative necessity requiring the suspension ac05q of the Charter rule that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date it is introduced and that such ordinance or resolu- tion shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared that such public emergency and imperative necessity exist, and having requested that such Charter rule be suspended, and that this ordinance be passed finally on the date of its introduction and take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO ORDAINED.
