EXPRESSING THE INTENTION OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI TO ACCEPT TN PRINCIPLE THE
PROPOSAL OF THE STATE HIGHWAY COMISSION
TO CONTRIBUTE FIFTY PERCENT OF THE CON-
STRUCTION COST OF A REPLACEMENT OF THE
PRESENT BASCULE BRIDGE ON U. S. HIGHWAY
181 OVER THE CORPUS CHRISTI SHIP CHANNEL
WITH A MORE ADEQUATE FACILITY AND DIRECT-
ING COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION TO BE FOR-
WARDED TO THE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION,
NUECES COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT AND THE
NUECES COUNTY NAVIGATION DISTRICT NO. 1;
AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, on August 23, 1950, State Highway Commission
of the State of Texas passed minute number 28990 which said minutes
directed the State Highway Engineer to tender to Nueces County
and to the City of Corpus Christi a proposal in connection with
the replacement of the present bascule bridge on U. S. Highway
181 over the Corpus Christi Ship Channel with a more adequate
facility; and
WHEREAS, on September 14, 1950, at a special meet.
ing called and held in the Council Chamber of the City of Corpus
Christi, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi together
with the County Commissioners Court of Nueces County and repre-
sentatives of the Nueces County Navigation District No. 1 held a
joint meeting for the purpose of discussing the said proposal of
said State Highway commissions and it was agreed by a motion
made and seconded and passed that the said Nueces County Commis-
sioners Court and the City Council of the City of corpus Christi
in principle to the offer made by the State Highway Commission:
NOW, THEREFORE, EE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS.
SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi hereby
accepts in principle the proposal of the State Highway Commis-
sion as stated in said Minutes No. 28990, and it is understood
in connection with this resolution that the exact mode of re-
placement of said bascule bridge has not been determined, and
that the same will be determined as a result of more complete
study and survey than has been made at the present time, and
that the proposal of the said order of the State Highway Com-
mission as reflected by said Minutes was to establish a principle
under which the cost is to be shared, ifs asp and when the work
is undertaken.
SECTION 2. That 'if. B. Collier, the duly authorized
City �anager, be and he is hereby authorized anddirected to for.
ward certified copies of this resolution to the State Highway
Commission of the State of Texas, together with the appreciation
of the City of Corpus Christi for the interest and cooperatio n
manifested by the State Highway Commission in the traffic problems
of the City of Corpus Christi in regard to the present bascule
bridge facilities and that this resolution shall constitute a
formal request for the State Highway Commission to proceed with
engineering study and negotiations in connection with said pro-
ject.
SECTION 3. That W. B. Collier, the du]grauthorized
City'aanager of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, be and he
is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy
of this resolution to the Commissioners Court of Nueces County,
Texas, and the Board of Directors of the Nueces County Navigation
District No. 1.
SECTION 4. That it being og great aublic interest
that there be undertaken certain improvements to the bascule
bridge crossing at the harbor entrance to the City of Corpus
Christi so as to permit free use of the corpus Christi ship
Channel by ocean going traffic and to promote better facilities
for vehicular traffic over said ship channel, and it being im.
perative that engineering study be obtained in order that the
correct, proper and best facility shall be chosen for such re-

ance or resolution shall be passed finally on the day it is
introduced and that such ordinance or resolution shall be read
at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor
having declared such emergency and necessity to exist, and
having requested that such Charter rule be suspended and that
that this ordinance be passed finally on the day it is intro-
duced and that it take effect and be in full force and effect
from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO ORDAINED,
PASSED AND APPROVED, This the 19th day of September
1950.

Gentlemen:
For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the fore-
going ordinance, a public emergency and imperative necessity exist for
the suspension of the Charter rule or requirement that no ordinance or
resolution shall be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and
that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three meetings of the
City Councils I. therefore, hereby request that you suspend said Charter
rule or requirement and pass this ordinance finally on the date it is
introduced, or at the present meeting of the City Council.
