The Honorable Mayor Leslie Wasserman and
Members of the City Council of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi, Texas
Gentlemen:
You are aware of the fact that the Citizens' Committee has spent many months
working on a downtown recreational center for the enlisted personnel of the
naval establishments located in the Corpus Christi area.
In the last few months we have been working with the City Park and Recreation
Board on a plan by which a building would be built jointly by the Citizens'
Committee and the City, the first floor to be used as a navy recreation center
and locker club, and the second floor to be used as the Park and Recreation
Board's headquarters.
As Chairman of the 6itizens'Committee, I have been endeavoring to raise the
necessary funds on the part of the citizens of Corpus Christi to put this
project into effect and make Corpus Christi again a "good Navy town ", as
was its reputation during World War 1I.
It is my understanding that the City has appropriated or earmarked $91,000
for Park and Recreation Board headquarters, and that the Park and Recreation
Board is willing to join the Citizens' Committee in constructing and using
such a building, which is to be located on city property.
The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the Citizens' Committee is
ready to embark on the project together with the Park and Recreation Board;
that the Citizens' Committee is prepared to pay for one —half of the cost of
the building, up to $90,000. V e earnestly request you appropriate the
necessary funds for the Park and Recreation Board's portion of the cost and
make arrangements for the use of the land as soon as possible.
Yours very truly,
/S/ T. S. Scibienski
