AUTHORIZING THE TRANSFER OF A FRANCHISE TO ENGAGE IN THE
BUSINESS OF OPERATING A "DRIVERLESS AUTOMOBILE" BUSINESS
FROM CORPUS CHRISTI TRANSPORTATION CO. TO THE HERTZ COR-
PORATIO &; AND ALL: - ,RIGHTS - AND "PRIVILEGES THEREUNDER; AND
DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of,Corpus Christi, Texas, did on the
9th day of November, 1955, pass and approve an ordinance granting a franchise
to Corpus Christi Transportation Co., said ordinance being No. 4383 of the city
Ordinances of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas; and
WHEREAS, the said Corpus Christi Transportation Co. has received thirty five
(35) permits numbered 201 through 235, both inclusive, granted in connection with
said franchise and under the Ordinances of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas; and
WHEREAS, THE HERTZ CORPORATION is in the process of purchasing said franchise,
business, rights and privileges of Corpus Christi Transportation Co., with such
sale being subject to the approval of the City Council of the City of Corpus
Christi, Texas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI, TEXAS: .
SECTION 1. That the franchise to engage in the business of operating a
"driverless automobile" business and all rights and privileges thereunder and
incident thereto, which was issued and granted Corpus Christi Transportation Co.
on the 9th day of November, 1955, is hereby authorized to be transferred to
THE HERTZ CORPORATION, together with thirty five (35) active driverless automo-
bile permits numbered 201 through 235, both inclusive, now held by Corpus
Christi Transportation Co., and said transfer is hereby approved.
SECTION 2. That the said THE HERTZ CORPORATION shall be bound by all the
terms, covenants and obligations of the said original franchise, all amendments
thereto, and all applicable ordinances now in effect by the City of Corpus
Christi, Texas, and any applicable ordinance that may hereafter be adopted by
said City.
SECTION 3. That the franchise, rights and privileges, and permits hereby
authorized and permitted shall be binding only upon the acceptance thereof in
writing by THE HERTZ CORPORATION within 30 days after the final passage thereof,
and full compliance by THE HERTZ CORPORATION with the terms of the existing driver-
less automobile ordinance No. 1691 as amended by subsequent amendments, including
particularly ordinance No. 3764 and 3871.

SECTION 4. The fact that THE HERTZ CORPORATION cannot legally operate driver-
less automobiles within the City Limits of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, and
cannot acquire the franchise, privileges, rights and permits now held by the said
Corpus Christi Transportation Co, without the formal approval of the City Council
of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, and the fact that it has been deemed de-
sirable for the public interest to facilitate, expedite and approve the said
transfer of said franchise, privileges and permits creates a public emergency
and an imperative public necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule
that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its in-
troduction and that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several
meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared that such emergency
and necessity -o exist, and having requested that such Charter rule be suspended,
and that this ordinance be passed finally on the date of its introduction and take
effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage IT IS ACCORDINGLY
SO ORDAINED.

Gentlemen:
For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing
ordinance, a public emergency and imperative necessity exist for the suspen-
sion of the Charter rule or requirement that no ordinance or resolution shall
be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or
resolution shall be read at three meetings of the City Council; I, therefore,
hereby request that you suspend said Charter rule or requirement and pass
this ordinance finally on the date it is introduced, or at the present meeting
of the City Council.
