SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING
APRIL 20, 1987
5:00 p.m.

Mayor Luther Jones called the meeting to order in the Council Chamber of
City Hall.
City Secretary Armando Chapa called the roll and verified that the
necessary quorum of the Council and the required Charter Officers were present
to conduct the meeting.
Council Member Bill Pruet arrived at 5:02 p.m.
City Secretary Chapa stated that the Council received a memorandum from him
with an attached computer printout of the voter results of the April 18, 1987
Runoff Election for the Mayor and Districts 1 and 5 Council Members. He stated
that after reviewing the General Return sheets against the election report
which was released on Saturday evening, no errors are evident. He also
certified to the best of his knowledge, that the voting results are accurate and
asked the Council to canvass the returns and declare the results as official.
Mayor Jones checked the finals of the General Return Sheets in the
following precincts: Precincts 75, 92 and 70 which were correct.
In answer to a question from Mayor Pro Tem Best, City Secretary Chapa
stated that the turnout for the General Election was 40.5% and 42.6% for the
Runoff Election. He also stated that this was the highest turnout in years.
City Secretary Chapa expressed appreciation to his Staff in the City
Secretary's office, to the City Manager and to several Assistant City Managers
for all the help and assistance given during the Election.

Mayor Jones inquired if there were any comments from the audience and there
were none.
City Secretary Armando Chapa polled the Council for their votes and the
following Ordinance was passed:
1. ORDINANCE NO. 19711
CANVASSING RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE RUNOFF ELECTION FOR THE
PURPOSE OF ELECTING THE MAYOR AND TWO COUNCIL MEMBERS OF THE CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI ON THE 18TH DAY OF APRIL 1987; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
The Charter Rule was suspended and the foregoing Ordinance passed by the
following vote: Jones, Best, Berlanga, Guerrero, Mendez, Pruet, Slavik and
Strong voting, "Aye"; McComb absent.
There being no further business to come before the Council, on motion by
Council Member Berlanga, seconded by Council Member Strong and passed
unanimously, the meeting was adjourned at 5:07 p.m.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of the
Minutes of the Special Council Meeting of the City of Corpus Christi of April
20, 1987, which were approved by the City Council on April 28, 1987.
