HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes City Council - 04/04/1989 - SpecialMINUTES CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING APRIL 4, 1989 10:00 a.m. PRESENT Mayor Betty Turner Mayor Pro Tem Frank Schwing Council Members: David Berlanga, Sr. Leo Guerrero Clif Moss Bill Pruet Mary Rhodes Mary Pat Slavik Linda Strong City Manager Juan Garza City Attorney Hal George City Secretary Armando Chapa Mayor Turner called the Council Meeting to order in the Council Chamber of City Hall. The invocation was delivered by Father Larry White of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church following which the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was led by Council Member Mary Pat Slavik. City Secretary Chapa called the roll and verified that the necessary quorum of the Council and the required charter officers were present to conduct the meeting. Mayor Turner expressed the opinion that the present Council had done an excellent job during their tenure. She then called for remarks from the departing Council Members. Council Members Bill Pruet, Mary Pat Slavik and Linda Strong made departing remarks and expressed appreciation to their families and everyone affiliated with their terms as Council Members. Mayor Turner indicated that in terms of effectiveness, the present Council rates an A to A+. She then elaborated on the numerous projects which the Council was responsible for, including the Watergarden, the building of the new City Hall, the building of the new Central Library, the Hayden Head addition at the Airport and the institution of the Heart of Corpus Christi. She noted that it was this Council who broke ground on Homeport and the Aquarium. Mayor Turner elaborated on the specific projects that each of the three departing Council Members were responsible for and publicly claimed that they have made a difference. Blackmon who presided over the swearing-in ceremonies for the Mayor and the following Council Members: David Berlanga, Sr., Leo Guerrero, Tom Hunt, Edward A. Martin, Joe McComb, Clif Moss, Mary Rhodes and Frank Schwing. After receiving the Oaths of Office, the Mayor and Council Members expressed words of appreciation to all those affiliated with their elections. Mayor Turner called for comments from the audience and there were none. She then expressed appreciation to the community for their support of the Council.
