WHEREAS, Corpus Christi is served by the exceptional programs and able
staff of Del Mar Junior College; and
WHEREAS, the boundaries of Del Mar Junior College include generally only
the limits of Corpus Christi Independent School District; and
WHEREAS, only the property owners of the Corpus Christi Independent School
District, and no others, pay the $.12 per $100 of assessed valuation property tax to
support Del Mar Junior College.
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi and the metropolitan area have grown
substantially since the creation of Del Mar Junior College District; and
WHEREAS, the community of interest of all the people of Nueces.Couaty is
one and the same, interweaving through its economic, cultural, and social lives; and
WHEREAS, the presence in Corpus Christi of Corpus Christi State University,
an upper-level college brings greater emphasis to the need for the entire metropolitan
area to be also served by junior college facilities; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi feels deeply its
responsibility to bring to the attention of the leaders of the community problems
which are of immediate and significant concern to the future of the metropolitan
area; and
WHEREAS, the City Council, both as a body and as individuals, wishes to
enable every citizen of Corpus Christi and the area to' have an equal opportunity to.
obtain an education and, to that end, to have junior college level staff and
facilities available to each and every area student on the same basis and at the same
Cost.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI, TEXAS THAT:
SECTION 1. The Del Mar Junior College District Board of Regents is hereby
requested to initiate those steps necessary to bring about the expansion of the
boundaries of Del Mar College to include all of Nueces County or; as a first step,
all the area contained in Flour Bluff, West Oso, Tuloso-Midway; and Calallen
Independent School Districts;

SECTION 2. The legislative delegation from Nueces County is hereby
requested to sponsor legislation to accomplish such expansion in the most
expeditious manner.
SECTION 3. That the citizens of Nueces County are hereby called upon
to recognize the extreme importance of the availability of equal educational
facilities to all of the students of the area if the economic, cultural, and
social future of this metropolitian area is to be preserved and improved, and
therefore, said citizens are requested to earnestly study the merits of this
question and to wholeheartedly support the expansion of the junior college
district boundaries.

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance, a
public emergency and imperative necessity exist for the suspension of the Charter
rule or requirement that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on
the date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or resolution shall be read
at three meetings of the City Council; I, therefore, request that you suspend
said Charter rule or requirement and pass this ordinance finally,on the date it
is introduced, or at the present meeting of the City Council.

which was passed by the City Council of the City of Corpus
Christi, Texas on July 9, 1980.
This Resolution expresses the support of the City
Council for the Del Mar Junior College District Board of
Regents to initiate steps necessary to expand the boundaries
of the District.
Any assistance you may be able to provide in passing
legislation to accomplish such expansion will be greatly
appreciated.
