HomeMy WebLinkAbout16197 RES - 04/15/1981A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Dr. McIver Furman, a lifelong resident and member of a pioneer Corpus Christi family, was on April 2, 1981, called to his eternal rest; and WHEREAS, Dr. McIver Furman was an honorary member of numerous local, state and national medical associations and the 1980 recipient of the Texas Pediatric Society's merit award for outstanding contributions to the health and welfare of Texas children, and will be long remembered in Corpus Christi for his active leadership in the medical profession, having retired from active family practice in 1969 to devote full time to his duties as a trustee for both the Driscoll Foundation and the Driscoll Foundation Children's Hospital. He was chairman of the Foundation's governing board since its formation in 1945 and served as the Hospital's general director from 1969 to 1973. He had traveled extensively to observe children's hospi- tals and counseled the late Clara Driscoll on setting up the Foundation that serves the needs of crippled and sick children in South Texas; and WHEREAS, Dr. McIver Furman will also be long remembered for his dedication as a civic leader; he served the City of Corpus Christi as mayor, having been elected in 1965 as leader of the Greater Corpus Christi Party; he was a strong advocate of the council-manager form of government; was an active and enthusiastic booster of the Port of Corpus Christi; was co-founder of public television station KEDT-TV, a co-founder and former director of the Corpus Christi Industrial Foundation and past president of the Chamber of Commerce; and he was honored by being crowned King Alonzo IV of the annual Buccaneer Days celebration in 1957; and WHEREAS, his vast knowledge and untiring service to the community have benefitted innumerable people, and his passing is a great loss to the citizens of the City of Corpus Christi as well as to his family and his many friends, leaving an irreplaceable void in the community: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That this brief record of the many accomplishments of Dr. McIver Furman be recalled and that the citizens of this community join in mourning the loss of this valuable citizen. j497 miCROFILMEP SEP 2 71984 SECTION 2.
