HomeMy WebLinkAbout16294 RES - 06/03/1981A RESOLUTION IN APPRECIATION OF THE NAMING OF THE SUBMARINE SSN 705 AFTER THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, AND EXTENDING AN INVITATION TO THE UNITED STATES NAVY TO COMMISSION THIS SUBMARINE IN THE CITY OF ITS NAMESAKE; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi has had strong ties with "The Men Who Go Down to the Sea in Ships" since the Spanish Naval Explorer, Alonso Alvarez de Pineda sailed into a sheltered body of water along the Southern Coast of Texas on the Feast Day of Corpus Christi in 1519, and was so impressed with its beauty and tranquility that he named it Corpus Christi in honor of the occasion; and WHEREAS, throughout its colorful history, Corpus Christi has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States Navy, being the home of the World's largest Naval Air Training Command for over 40 years, and points with pride to the relationship that has existed between the Naval personnel and the civilian population of our City throughout these years as attested to by the many men and women who have served here and; WHEREAS, during World War II the Navy honored this City by naming its ship, The PF44, USS Corpus Christi after our City; and WHEREAS, during the Viet Nam conflict we were again honored when a Helicopter repair vessel the USNS Corpus Christi Bay, T-ARVH-1, was named for our City; and WHEREAS, as these ships served the Navy and our beloved country with honor and distinction during two periods of conflict, it is fitting and proper that another vessel should carry on the proud tradition of that name, not as a weapon of war, but as a weapon of peace to insure that this submarine may continue to maintain the peace that its predecessors helped to achieve; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS THAT: The City Council express this City's gratitude to the United States Navy, and to Senator John Tower for the honor bestowed upon it by naming the Submarine SSN 705 the USS CORPUS CHRISTI and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we extend to the United States Navy an invitation to commission this submarine in the City for which it was named. MICROFILMED 16294 SEP 2 71984 AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Secretary be directed to send a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of Navy, Senator John Tower, and Commander W. A. Owens, Commanding Officer of USS Corpus Christi. The need for the City Council to express its appreciation to those herein named and extend this invitation in a timely manner constitutes a public emergency and imperative public necessity requiring suspension of the Charter rule that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its introduction but that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council .and the Mayor, having declared that such an emergency and necessity exist, having requested the suspension of the Charter rule and that this resolution be passed finally on the date of its introduction and take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO RESOLVED, THIS the 3rd day of June, 1981.
