Men Who Go Down to the Sea in Ships" since the Spanish Naval Explorer,

Southern Coast of Texas on the Feast Day of Corpus Christi in 1519, and was
so impressed with its beauty and tranquility that he named it Corpus Christi in
honor of the occasion; and
WHEREAS, throughout its colorful history, Corpus Christi has
enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States Navy, being
the home of the World's largest Naval Air Training Command for over 40 years,
and points with pride to the relationship that has existed between the Naval
personnel and the civilian population of our City throughout these years as
attested to by the many men and women who have served here and;
WHEREAS, during World War II the Navy honored this City by naming its
ship, The PF44, USS Corpus Christi after our City; and
WHEREAS, during the Viet Nam conflict we were again honored when
a Helicopter repair vessel the USNS Corpus Christi Bay, T-ARVH-1, was named
for our City; and
WHEREAS, as these ships served the Navy and our beloved country
with honor and distinction during two periods of conflict, it is fitting and
proper that another vessel should carry on the proud tradition of that name,
not as a weapon of war, but as a weapon of peace to insure that this submarine
may continue to maintain the peace that its predecessors helped to achieve;
