A RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI CITY COUNCIL IN
SUPPORT OF THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS' DISPOSAL PLAN
FOR COMPLETING THE DEEPENING OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI
SHIP CHANNEL TO ITS AUTHORIZED 45 -FOOT DEPTH.
WHEREAS, the Port of Corpus Christi serves the City of Corpus
Christi and the Coastal Bend area and is vital to the industrial and
agricultural base of this area; and
WHEREAS, keeping the Port competitive with respect to channel
depth and facilities is a major element of the City's economic base and
community development; and
WHEREAS, the United States Army Corps of Engineers has com-
pleted construction of 71 percent of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel
project, and all that remains to be dredged is the Inner Harbor; and
WHEREAS, the Corps of Engineers, after extensive study of the
alternative dredged material disposal sites, has recommended the South
Shore of Nueces Bay and two areas adjacent to the Inner Harbor as the
best locations for disposing of dredged materials, and has presented
this recommendation along with an extensive Draft Environmental Impact
Statement; and
WHEREAS, continued development of the natural resources, parti-
cularly the bays and shorelines, which are essential to the economic
prosperity of the area, has been adequately addressed with due considera-
tion for overall environmental concerns in the Corps of Engineers recom-
mendation; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds the plan as proposed by the
Corps of Engineers to dispose of dredged material primarily on the south
shore of Nueces Bay to be the best alternative to assure both immediate
and long-term goals for deepening and maintaining the Ship Channel in
harmony with the environment:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF CORPUS
CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the City Council reaffirms its support for the
deepening of the Port of Corpus Christi's Inner Harbor to a depth of 45

feet and disposal of the dredged material on the South Shore of Nueces
Bay.
SECTION 2. That the City Council urges the Corps of Engineers
to proceed expeditiously with its selected plan for disposal of the
dredged material as described in the Supplement to the Final Environmental
Statement issued in August, 1981.
SECTION 3. That the necessity for the City of Corpus Christi
to express, through its City Council, its support for the Nueces Bay
disposal site and this project creates a public emergency and necessity
requiring the suspension of the Charter rule, and the Mayor or Council
members having declared such emergency and necessity to exist, having
requested the suspension of the Charter rule and that this resolution
take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage,
IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO RESOLVED this the 2 day of Sepgember, 1981.

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance or resolution,
an emergency exists requiring suspension of the Charter rule as to consideration and voting
upon ordinances or resolutions at three regular meetings; I/we, therefore, request that you
suspend said Charter rule and pass this ordinance or resolution finally on the date it is
introduced, or at the present meeting of the City Council.
