AMENDING SECTION 36-9 OF THE CODE OF '
ORDINANCES TO MODIFY THE DEFINITIONS
PERTAINING TO THE REGULATION OF OVERNIGHT
CAMPING AND CAMPFIRES; TO PROHIBIT OVERNIGHT
CAMPING AND CAMPFIRES IN THE CORPUS CHRISTI
IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT AND THE SHORELINE -OCEAN
DRIVE PARKWAY WITH CERTAIN EXCEPTIONS; AND
PROVIDING FOR SEVERANCE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF,THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION I. 1That the Code of Ordinances of the City of
Corpus Christi, Section 36-9, Regulation of Overnight Camping and
Campfires, be amended by deleting the text of said Section in its
entirety and substituting the following:
(a) Definitions.
Camping. Occupying a site as a dwelling place for
, any length of time, whether in a vehicle, tent or improvised
shelter, sleeping bag or without a shelter. Occupation of a site
under the circumstances above for more than two hours at any time
during the period from midnight to sunrise shall be presumed to
be overnight camping.
Campfires. Any open fire composed of any material
in a fire pit or on the ground, except for those fires contained
in a barbeque pit constructed and maintained by the City or in a
portable barbeque pit or similar device designed for the
preparation of food.
Corpus Christi Improvement District. The area
consisting of Corpus Christi Beach and the downtown and uptown
areas of Corpus Christi, more accurately described by metes and
bounds in Article IX, Section 29 of the City Charter.
Shoreline - Ocean Drive Parkway. The area
included within the boundaries of West Shoreline Drive beginning
at the Corpus Christi Ship Channel then south to its intersection
with Ocean Drive, then south along Ocean Drive to the northgate
of the Naval Air Station, then northward along the mean tide

shoreline of Corpus Christi Bay to the point of origin, inclusive
of the T and L heads, the breakwater and the barge dock.
(b) Prohibitions. It shall be unlawful for any person
to camp overnight or build campfires on any of the publicly -owned
areas within the Corpus Christi Improvement District or the
Shoreline -Ocean Drive Parkway.
(c) Exceptions. A person may camp overnight at Corpus
Christi Beach Park located at the northernmost end of Corpus
Christi Beach only within those areas designated by posted signs
for a period not to exceed two consecutive nights. A person may
camp overnight in the municipal parking lots adjacent to the
Coliseum, Exposition Hall, and Bayfront Arts & Science Park,
provided that the person is in a self-contained camping vehicle
and is using the premises in conjunction with a lease of any such
facilities.
SECTION 2. If for any reason any section, paragraph,
subdivision, clause, phrase, word, or provision of this ordinance
shall be held invalid or unconstitutional by final judgment of a
court of competent jurisdiction it shall not affect any other
section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word, or
provision of this ordinance, for it is the definite intent of
this City Council that every section, paragraph, subdivision,
clause, phrase, word or provision hereof be given full force and
effect for its purpose.
