HomeMy WebLinkAbout17026 RES - 05/05/198217, A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CONCEPT OF A MUSEUM OF ORIENTAL CULTURES IN THE BAYFRONT SCIENCE PARK, TO BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND TO BE OPERATED ON A NON- PROFIT BASIS; AND EXPRESSING THE INTENTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL TO PROVIDE A SITE IN THE BAY- FRONT SCIENCE PARK FOR THE MUSEUM OF ORIENTAL CULTURES. WHEREAS, the Japanese Art Museum was established in Corpus Christi in 1974 to provide a permanent collection of Asian art and artifacts and was expanded'in 1975 to provide educational programs for the Corpus Christi Indepen-, dent School District; and WHEREAS, the public programs of the Japanese Art Museum was further expanded in 1978 according to the terms of a contract with the City of Corpus Cfiristi to include maintaining regular hours open to the public, providing scheduled tours and musical events upon request of school, civic and neighbor- hood groups,showing films of an educational and cultural nature, and participating in Sister City functions; and WHEREAS, the contract has been renewed annually and the development of the Japanese Art Museum has continued to progress such that the services pro- vided the City now include regularly scheduled educational instruction, performing arts and craft demonstrations, outreach programs, and support of industrial and tourist development efforts; and WHEREAS, the growth and success of the Japanese Art Museum has created a need for a new facility, and the Japanese Art Museum after research and study has determined that the use of publicly owned land in the Bayfront Science Park is essential from a financial point of view in order for the new facility to become a reality and has requested a commitment from the City of Corpus Christi concerning the availability of an adequate site for such facility; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi has deter, - mined that the Japanese Art Museum, open to the general public and operated on a non-profit basis, is an asset for the City and that the use of publicly owned land as the site thereof would be compatible with the best interest of its citizens; and WHEREAS, the Japanese Art Museum has been renamed Museum of Oriental Cultures: 17026' SEP 8 1984 MICROFILMED NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council hereby endorses the concept of a new facility for the Museum of Oriental Cultures, formerly known as the Japanese Art Museum, open to the public and operated on a non-profit basis, as a desirable addition to the City of Corpus Christi. SECTION 2. That it is the expressed intention of the City Council that a site in the Bayfront Science Park located in the City of Corpus Christi will be made available for the construction thereon of a new facility for the Museum of Oriental Cultures, to be constructed without the use of public funds of the City of Corpus Christi, subject to the negotiation of a maintenance and operation agreement acceptable to the City of Corpus Christi.
