HomeMy WebLinkAbout17349 1/2 RES - 11/10/1982T i 1 at A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Rabbi Sidney Wolf has been an outstanding civic and religious leader in Corpus Christi for 50 years; and WHEREAS, his many accomplishments include leadership roles in the Community Council, USO Council, the Cosmos Club, the American Red Cross (Nueces County Chapter), Suicide Prevention/Crisis Service, LaRetama Library, Travelers' Aid, Family Service Bureau, and the Hearth Nursing Home; and WHEREAS, Rabbi Sidney Wolf's contributions in the area of serious music reflect his background as a music student in theory, harmony, organ and piano at the Cincinnati Conservatory, and his understanding and appreciation of music was instrumental in the organization of the local Symphony Society; and his music appreciation course, "Perceiving Music", taught at Del Mar College and Corpus Christi State University in the 1970s and 1980s, educated scores of local citizens about the joys and history of symphonic music which resulted in a greater appreciation of music throughout the community; and WHEREAS, Rabbi Sidney Wolf in 1936 was instrumental in instituting with the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, the joint Thanksgiving service for the Corpus Christi community in which people of all faiths gather to celebrate Thanksgiving. While serving as rabbi at the Temple Beth El, he served as chaplain at the Naval Air Station, assisting scores of young men during wartime with their personal and social concerns; and his scholarly teaching about religion throughout the community has promoted religious', awareness and goodwill in an extraordinary way; and WHEREAS, although retired from the pulpit, Rabbi Sidney Wolf's influence and goodwill continue to be felt in the community: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, hereby expresses its deepest appreciation and gratitude and that of the citizens of Corpus Christi to Rabbi Sidney Wolf for his many years of outstanding service and dedication to the citizens of the City of Corpus Christi and surrounding community. 1'7349/ MICROFILMED SEP 2 81984 • A t' SECTION 2. That the City Secretary of the City of Corpus Christi is hereby instructed to provide a copy of this resolution to Rabbi Sidney Wolf. SECTION 3. That upon written request of the Mayor or five Council members, copy attached, to find and declare an emergency due to the need to express the City's appreciation to Rabbi Sidney Wolf, such finding of an emergency is made and declared requiring suspension of the Charter rule as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three regular meetings so that this resolution is passed and shall take effect upon first reading as an emergency measure this the 10th day of November, 1982.
