HomeMy WebLinkAbout18285 ORD - 06/12/1984AN ORDINANCE CREATING THE CORPUS CHRISTI REGIONAL TRANSIT AUTHORITY TO BE INITIALLY COMPRISED OF NUECES AND SAN PATRICIO COUNTIES; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, by resolution adopted May 23, 1984, the City Council called for a public hearing to be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the City of Corpus Christi on the question of creating a metropolitan rapid transit authority, and notice of said public hearing was published in the Corpus Christi Caller Times on May 27, 1984, and June 3, 1984; WHEREAS, the City Council conducted said public hearing on June 12, 1984, as provided by the resolution and in accordance with applicable State law; WHEREAS, after hearing the evidence introduced at said hearing, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, has found and determined that the creation of such an authority and the operation of such a transit system would be of benefit to the persons and property situated within the boundaries of the proposed authority, would be of public utility, and would be in the public interest; TEXAS: BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, SECTION 1. That the Corpus Christi Regional Transit Authority is hereby created as a metropolitan rapid transit authority pursuant to Article 1118x, Vernon's Annotated Civil Statues, initially comprised of the territory included within Nueces and San Patricio counties, provided that the actual territory to be included within said authority is subject to the results of an election conducted pursuant to said statute. SECTION 2. That upon written request of the Mayor or five Council members, copy attached, to find and declare an emergency due to the emergency in public funding for mass transit services and the urgent public necessity for developing a reliable mass transportation system for the people of Corpus Christi, such finding of an emergency is made and declared requiring suspension of the Charter rule as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three regular meetings so that this resolution is passed and shall take effect upon first reading as an emergency measure this the /„2 day of 1984.
