REQUESTING THE TEXAS ANTIQUITIES COMMITTEE TO DESIGNATE THE
CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM AS THE DEPOSITORY FOR THE COLLECTION
OF SPANISH SHIPWRECK ARTIFACTS FOUND OFF PADRE ISLAND KNOWN
AS THE PLATORO/KEENAN/PURVIS COLLECTION; AUTHORIZING AND
DIRECTING THE CITY SECRETARY TO FORWARD A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO THE TEXAS ANTIQUITIES COMMITTEE; AND DECLARING
AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi through its
official actions on January 7, 1970, January 23, 1974, and November 17, 1982,
requested that the Corpus Christi Museum be the permanent depository for all of
the Spanish shipwreck artifacts salvaged from the Padre Island area; and
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi and the Texas Antiquities
Committee have entered into an agreement which was approved by the City Council
on February 15, 1984, providing for the placement of a portion of the Spanish
shipwreck artifacts, known as the San Esteban collection in the Corpus Christi
Museum and providing curatorial guidelines for the care and display of the
collection; and
WHEREAS, the remainder of the artifacts, known as the Platoro/
Keenan/Purvis Collection, have been involved in litigation and the Texas
Antiquities Committee anticipates the final settlement of the Platoro lawsuit in
the near future, and the Texas Antiquities Committee is requesting proposals
from qualified Museums for the placement of the Platoro/Keenan/Purvis
Collections; and
WHEREAS the Corpus Christi Museum is the only qualified professional
Museum established in the locality in which the artifacts were discovered and
recovered; and
WHEREAS, the placement of the Platoro/Keenan/Purvis Collection at the
Corpus Christi Museum would keep the collections from the Spanish shipwreck,
intact for display purposes and study by scholars;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the Texas Antiquities Committee is hereby requested
to designate the Corpus Christi Museum as the depository for the artifacts from
the Spanish shipwreck found off Padre Island, known as the Platoro/Keenan/Purvis
Collection.
SECTION 2. That the City Council remains committed to displaying and
curating the shipwreck collection in accordance with the curatorial guidelines
of the Texas Antiquities Committee.

SECTION 3. That the City Council intends to pursue plans which are
presently being developed to expand the Corpus Christi Museum to provide an even
better facility for the care and display of the Spanish shipwreck artifacts.
SECTION 4. That the City Secretary is hereby authorized and directed
to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Texas Antiquities
Committee at Austin, Texas.
SECTION 5. That upon written request of the Mayor or five Council
members, copy attached, to find and declare an emergency because of the
necessity to request the designation of the Corpus Christi Museum as the
depository for the artifacts from the Spanish shipwreck found off Padre Island,
known as the Platoro/Keenan/Purvis Collection, creates a public emergency, such
finding of an emergency is made and declared requiring suspension of the Charter
rule as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three
regular meetings so that this resolution is passed and shall take effect upon
first reading as an emergency measure this the 18th day of June, 1985.

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance
or resolution, an emergency exists requiring suspension of the Charter rule
as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three
regular meetings; I/we, therefore, request that you suspend said Charter rule
and pass this ordinance or resolution finally on the date it is introduced,
or at the present meeting of the City Council.
