HomeMy WebLinkAbout19029 RES - 09/24/1985A RESOLUTION CONCURRING WITH THE FINDINGS OF THE SOUTH TEXAS BARRIER ISLAND TASK FORCE AND URGING THE COASTAL BARRIER STUDIES GROUP, THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, AND THE MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO ACCEPT THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE SOUTH TEXAS BARRIER ISLAND TASK FORCE; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS. the City Council has participated in the formation and activities of the South Texas Barrier Island Task Force; and WHEREAS, the South Texas Barrier Island Task Force takes exception to much of the U.S. Department of Interior's draft report to Congress on the Coastal Barrier Resources System published in April 1985; and WHEREAS, the Task Force has determined that implementation of the provisions of the draft report would severely harm the economy of South Texas through the loss of future jobs and their attendant wages and salaries. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. The Coastal Barrier Studies Group of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Secretary of the Interior, and the Members of Congress are urged to accept the recommendations of the South Texas Barrier Island Task Force. SECTION 2. The City Council concurs with the summary recommendations of the South Texas Barrier Island Task Force: That no additional areas be given the "undeveloped" designa- tion. That a 4,200 -acre tract immediately north of the Padre Island National Seashore be reclassified as "developed" due to the presence of a paved highway and water services as well as a potential for tourism related improvements. SECTION 3. That the City Secretary be directed to forward copies of this Resolution to the Coastal Barriers Study Group of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Secretary of the Interior, the Members of Congress representing this area, and the Governor of Texas. SECTION 4. That upon written request of the Mayor or five Council members, copy attached, to find and declare an emergency due to the necessity to urge the Federal Government to accept the recommendations of the South Texas Barrier Island Task Force, such finding of an emergency is 04P.117.01 19°29 MICROFILMED made and declared requiring suspension of the Charter rule as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three regular meetings so that this ordinance is passed and shall take effect upon first reading as an emergency measure this the 24th day of September, 1985.
