HomeMy WebLinkAbout19236 RES - 03/25/1986A RESOLUTION URGING THE U.S. CONGRESS AND THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO ENACT NO-FAULT LEGISLATION REGARDING VACCINES WHICH ARE COMMONLY USED TO PROTECT SENIOR CITIZENS AGAINST INFLUENZA AND PNEUMONIA, TO PROTECT CHILDREN AGAINST HEMOPHILUS INFLUENZA B WHICH CAUSES DEATH FROM MENINGITIS, AND TO PROTECT AGAINST DIPHTHERIA, WHOOPING COUGH, TETANUS, HEPATITIS AND OTHER SERIOUS DISEASES; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, during the past twelve months only two continued to produce vaccines to protect against diphteria, tetanus; and WHEREAS, only a small number of elderly citizens against pneumonia and influenza even though both diseases factors in severe disability and death in this group; and WHEREAS, the shrinking funds available for vaccines and the spiralin costs are reducing the availability to people who need it most; and WHEREAS, the scarcity and increasing cost of vaccines will discourage the use of vaccines which have recently become available to protect against hepatitis B and hemophilus influenza B, and vaccines which are expected to be available in the near future to protect against chicken pox, hepatitis A, and other serious diseases; and WHEREAS, the high cost of malpractice suits and inappropriate multimillion dollar court judgments have eliminated a number of suppliers of vaccines and increased the cost of vaccines; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the U.S. Congress and the Texas Legislature are urged to adopt no-fault legislation regarding vaccines which are used and can be used to protect the citizens against serious diseases such as diphteria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, hemophilus influenza 8, hepatitis A, chicken pox, influenza, and pneumonia. SECTION 2.
