Metzger degree from Columbia University in Division in Europe during World War II Christi with a growing practice when Director for Corpus Christi and Nueces received his undergraduate and medical New York, served in the 78th Infantry , and was a practicing internist in Corpus he was asked to serve as Acting Health County on April 10, 1954; and WHEREAS, he was appointed Health Director of Corpus Christi and Nueces County after having received a Masters Degree from Yale University and served in this capacity until January 15, 1980; and WHEREAS, the local health department has an enviable reputation as one of the finest in the state and that reputation is directly attributable to Dr. Metzger; and WHEREAS, he played a unique role in not only leading the staff but the city as a whole, helping citizens realize the connection between the health of the community and their own personal well-being; and WHEREAS, in his twenty-six years of devoted service to the Department he developed programs which have safeguarded the health of the citizens and which have served as a model throughout Texas and the United States; and WHEREAS, his concern and interest in the mental and socio-economic needs of the community led to the establishment of one of the first MHMR centers in the state, and a welfare department for the citizens of Nueces County; and WHEREAS, Dr. Metzger's knowledge of human nature and ability to solve problems by marshaling the forces of his staff, the medical community, and city and council officials won him the respect and enthusiastic support of all who served with him; and WHEREAS, his concern and compassion for those in greatest need led him to locate the Health Department building in an area which would be easily accessible to those most in need of the services; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the building at 1702 Horne Road presently known as the "City -County health Center" be renamed the "W. R. Metzger Public Health Center." SECTION 2.
