HomeMy WebLinkAbout19673 ORD - 03/12/1987A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE LEGISLATION ORGANIZING CORPUS CHRISTI STATE UNIVERSITY AS A FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, legislation has been introduced by Representative Berlanga and Senator Truan designating the University System of South Texas as the Comprehensive University System of South Texas; and WHEREAS, this legislation also organizes Corpus Christi State University as a four-year institution of higher education and authorizes a study of the higher education needs of the South Texas region; and WHEREAS, the Comprehensive University System of South Texas would be composed of Texas A & I University, Laredo State University, Corpus Christi State University, and other institutions and entities assigned to the system from time to time; and WHEREAS, this legislation would direct the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System, to conduct a study of the higher education needs of the South Texas region which includes the geographic area of Texas south of Bexar County; and WHEREAS, this study will review the demographic, economic, social, cultural, and other factors that may affect the region's educational needs, the use of existing facilities and resources by each component institution, the degree programs offered by each component institution, and the role and mission of each component institution; and • WHEREAS, this study will consider the impact of its recommendations on other colleges and universities in the region; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council supports the legislation organizing Corpus Christi State University as a four-year institution of higher education and authorizing a study of the higher education needs of the South Texas region. SECTION 2. That upon written request of the Mayor or five Council members, copy attached, to find and declare an emergency due to the need for efficient and effective administration of City affairs, such finding of an emergency is made and declared requiring suspension of the Charter rule as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three regular 03P.137.01 196'73 MICROFILMED meetings so that this resolution is passed and shall takg effect upon first reading as an emergency measure this the 17+h day of MGIr , 19$7 .
