WHEREAS, The Honorable Mayor Luther G. Jones, Jr. is this day
completing his tenure as Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Jones served with distinction for 29 years in the
United States Army, retiring as Colonel after serving as Commanding Officer of
the Corpus Christi Army Depot. His valuable leadership continued as Vice
President of Mercantile National Bank for seven and one-half years; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Jones has for eight years tirelessly devoted himself to
the discharge of the duties of his elected office with dignity, kindness,
fairness and unselfish devotion. His commitment to Corpus Christi has provided
services and projects to improve the quality of life and happiness of residents
and visitors; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Jones is the first elected official from Corpus Christi
to ever have served as President of the Texas Municipal League and also served
on its board of directors. He also served as a member of the board of directors
of the National League of Cities and on its advisory committee; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Jones created national awareness of Corpus Christi with
his outsanding and successful efforts to bring a major homeport site for the
U.S. Navy to this area ,and has been tireless in promoting Corpus Christi's
tourist industry; and
WHEREAS, We honor him for all his achievements in civic leadership,
his knowledge of municipal government, his dedication and devotion to our city,
his notable careersk and for the legacy he has provided present and future
residents. The quality of life in his beloved Corpus Christi has been greatly
enhanced by him and his work. We wish him continued success and happiness in
all endeavors.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI, TEXAS: That we has the governing body of the City of Corpus Christi
and representatives of its citizens do hereby express the appreciation of all
citizens to Luther Jones, Jr. on the occasion of his retirement form the
official duties as mayor of Corpus Christi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that as a continuing expression of our
gratitude, admiration and esteem, we bestow to Luther G. Jones, Jr. the very
prestigious, rarely awarded honor of the title of Mayor Emeritus of Corpus
Christi, Texas.
