WHEREAS, the world's largest particle accelerator, called the
Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) is being planned by the U.S. Department of
Energy and has been approved by President Reagan; and
WHEREAS, the SSC project will employ a permanent force of 2,500
scientists and technicians plus about 500 visiting scientists, and is projected
to have an annual economic impact of more than $250 million; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Energy has begun its site selection process
and issued an invitation for proposals; and
WHEREAS, a proposal on behalf of the South Texas Superconducting Super
Collider Task Force has been submitted by the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce in
conjunction with the Corpus Christi Area Economic Development Corporation; and
WHEREAS, the Task Force is a coalition of public and private
organizations in South Texas; and
WHEREAS, the location proposed by the Task Force lies between Corpus
Christi and Kingsville on land owned almost entirely by the King Ranch and
Chapman Ranch; and
WHEREAS, said land is mostly low intensity agricultural use land, and
construction would only minimally interfere with existing uses; and
WHEREAS, said land is ideally suited for the SSC use; and
WHEREAS, both owners of said land are willing to work toward providing
the land at no cost; and
WHEREAS, the project has widespread support throughout South Texas.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the Corpus Christi City Council fully and
enthusiastically supports the proposal submitted on behalf of the South Texas
Superconducting Super Collider Task Force.

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance
or resolution, an emergency exists requiring suspension of the Charter rule
as to consideration and voting upon ordinances or resolutions at three
regular meetings; I/we, therefore, request that you suspend said Charter rule
and pass this ordinance or resolution finally on the date it is introduced,
or at the present meeting of the City Council.
