OPPOSING THE LOCATION OF A RADIOACTIVE WASTE
DISPOSAL SITE WITHIN THE NUECES RIVER BASIN
AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi derives its water supply from a
reservoir at Lake Corpus Christi and one at Choke Canyon; and
and
WHEREAS, both of the reservoirs are located in the Nueces River Basin;
WHEREAS, these two reservoirs provide the sole supply of municipal and
industrial water to twenty-one (21) communities having a population of over
500,000; and
WHEREAS, the disposal and storage of radioactive material in these
areas could contaminate the water supply for Corpus Christi and other customers
in Nueces, Aransas, San Patricio, Bee, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Live Oak, McMullen,
Atascosa, and Duval counties; and
WHEREAS, the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority has
previously considered waste disposal sites in McMullen County and in Dimmitt
County within the Nueces River Basin; and
WHEREAS, the State legislature has asked the Texas Low Level
Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority to seek other locations on State-owned
property and away from water supplies; and
WHEREAS, the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority has
identified a suitable site in Hudspeth County presently in State ownership that
will not remove private property from public tax rolls.
WHEREAS, the State Land Commission has not transferred such lands to
the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority; and
WHEREAS, to date the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal
Authority has spent over $5.5 million on its site selection activities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:
SECTION 1. The City of Corpus Christi continues to oppose the
location of radioactive waste disposal facilities within its watershed.
SECTION 2. That the Texas Land Commissioner be requested to convey
the Hudspeth County site to the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal
Authority for a disposal facility.

SECTION 3. That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the
Governor, Texas Land Commissioner, members of the Texas Low Level Radioactive
Waste Disposal Authority, the Executive Director of the Texas Department of
Health, members of the Texas Legislature and the Directors of the Nueces River
Authority.
