WHEREAS, the League of United Latin American Citizens, more widely
recognized as LULAC, having been founded in Corpus Christi, Texas, on
February 17, 1929, has served the will and the needs of the Hispanic community
for 58 years and has extended every effort to insure the attainment of the
highest ideals of the Constitution of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Corpus Christi have been
privileged to witness the growth and maturation of the local LULAC Organization
into a national organization with chapters all across the continental United
States; and
WHEREAS, LULAC selected the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, as the site
for its highly successful 1987 National Convention which was responsible for the
infusion of 3.5 million convention dollars into the local economy and the visits
of: over 3,500 delegates and visitors; major Presidential candidates from both
political parties; numerous local, state, and federal officials; all of which
resulted in the focusing of national media coverage on our fair city; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi wishes to
thank LULAC and its leadership for the selection of Corpus Christi as the site
for the 1987 National Convention and particularly Mr. Ruben Bonilla who as
Convention Chairman, was responsible for the coordination of the local efforts
to make the convention a success; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi wishes to
convey its appreciation and that of the citizens of the City to Mr. Ruben
Bonilla, civic leader, attorney, and loyal supporter of the City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI:
SECTION 1. That the Corpus Christi City Council recognizes Ruben
Bonilla's efforts as commendable and praiseworthy.
SECTION 2. That the Corpus Christi City Council wishes to extend an
open invitation to future national and state conventions conducted by this
outstanding organization.
