ESTABLISHING AND EXPRESSING SUPPORT OF CORPUS CHRISTI'S
QUINCENTENNIAL COMMISSION.
WHEREAS, in 1992, major celebrations will be conducted throughout the
United States to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the
Americas; and
WHEREAS, Spain already has plans to have a World's Fair in Seville and
the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992, and the United States Government has created
a Quincentennial Commission, a national organization with which the local groups
will strive to work in order to institute some form of celebration; and
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi is an ideal place to focus a major
celebration for the Quincentennial because of our historic relationship with
Spain, and in the process, utilize this celebration as a major tourist
attraction in 1992. Alonzo de Pineda discovered and named Corpus Christi Bay,
and shipwreck artifacts from that era will be housed in one of our local
museums.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That this Council establish the Corpus Christi
Quincentennial Commission for the purpose of developing a series of short-range
and long-range plans and activities to make Corpus Christi a focal point for the
Quincentennial in 1992 because of our historic relationship with Spain.
SECTION 2. That the goal of the local Quincentennial Commission be to
include in its planned celebration social, cultural, educational, and economic
ventures involving Spain, Latin-American countries, and the City of Corpus
Christi in order to promote a better understanding and working relationship
within our own community among the various ethnic and racial groups by
recognizing the significance of the discovery of the Americas and its impact on
these groups.
SECTION 3. That the Corpus Christi Quincentennial Commission consist
of 21 members of this community to be appointed by the Chairman of the
Commission, and by the Mayor and City Council Members. The Mayor and each City
Council Member shall appoint two members and the Chairman of the Commission
shall appoint two members.
SECTION 4. That the Chairman of the Commission be Mr. Tony Bonilla,
as appointed by the Mayor of Corpus Christi, and that the City Council and
citizens pledge support of this very important Commission and its plans for
recognition of the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of the Americas.
