HomeMy WebLinkAbout020434 RES - 08/30/1988A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING LEGISLATION CONVERTING CORPUS CHRISTI STATE UNIVERSITY TO A FOUR -YEAR -PLUS COMPREHENSIVE UNIVERSITY OF HIGHER EDUCATION. WHEREAS, the City Council has previously passed a resolution to support legislation organizing Corpus Christi State University as a four-year institution of higher education and authorizing a study of the higher education needs of the South Texas region; and WHEREAS, the Trustees and Regents of the University of South Texas System and of the Texas A & M System have agreed to study the feasibility of merging the USST System and the Texas A & M System; and WHEREAS, the Del Mar Board of Regents by resolution adopted on July 12, 1988, resolved to support the expansion of educational opportunities in South Texas through the creation of Texas A & M University or University of Texas at Corpus Christi as a quality seven-year institution of higher learning, including additional Masters programs and Ph.D., post -graduate research, and professional level programs, while adopting enforceable safeguards to continue Del Mar College as a well -funded, nationally recognized community college offering academic, vocational, and adult education programs; and WHEREAS, the members of the City Council share and endorse the broad vision of higher education in South Texas exemplified by the foregoing resolution. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council supports: 1. The conversion of Corpus Christi State University into a comprehensive university, having four years of undergraduate study, additional Masters programs, doctoral programs, post -graduate research, and professional level programs; and 2. The adoption of enforceable safeguards to continue Del Mar College as a well -funded, nationally recognized community college offering academic, vocational, and adult educational programs; and 3. The support of Texas A & I University in achieving its educational goals by helping it obtain additional masters and doctoral programs, post -graduate research, and professional level programs; and 206RP171.res 20434MICROFIIMED 4. The encouragement of having a Texas A & M presence in South Texas by merging the USST System and the Texas A & M System.
