SUPPORTING PROPOSITION 1, THE GOOD ROADS AMENDMENT.
WHEREAS, Texas drivers pay a federal fuel tax of $.09 a gallon to the
Federal Highway Trust Fund which is then apportioned to the States to acquire,
construct, and maintain their highways and bridges; and
WHEREAS, Texas is apportioned approximately 800 million dollars a year
from the Federal Highway Trust Fund which since 1917 when federal highway funds
were first given to the states, Texas has applied 100 percent of its apportioned
federal funds to pay for building and maintaining over one-half of our state's
highways and bridges; and
WHEREAS, use of the Federal Highway Trust Fund monies for any purpose
other than protecting Texas' traditional pay-as-you-go highway program which has
the responsibility for the substantial investments in this state's highway
system which is the best in the nation, and has encouraged economic growth and
created jobs for Texas; and
WHEREAS, the use of the federal funds from the Federal Highway Fund
for any purpose other than acquiring rights-of-way, building, and maintaining
the state's highways and bridges would be a violation of the public trust placed
on the government's pledge to use the monies collected from the fuel tax only
for the purpose of building and maintaining the state's highways and bridges;
and
WHEREAS, the City Council on behalf of the citizens of the City of
Corpus Christi wishes to go on record as supporting Proposition 1, the GOOD
ROADS AMENDMENT.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi supports Proposition 1, to
ensure that funds received from the Federal Highway Funds by the State of Texas
are spent only for their intended purpose which is the maintenance and
improvement of the state's highways and bridges; and
SECTION 2. That we call on all Texans to join with us and all other
elected officials in support of Proposition 1, by voting "FOR" Proposition 1,
