HomeMy WebLinkAbout020593 RES - 02/21/1989A RESOLUTION STRONGLY SUPPORTING SENATE BILL 122 AND HOUSE BILL 358 PROVIDING FOR MERGER OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF SOUTH TEXAS WITH THE TEXAS A & M SYSTEM, EXPANSION OF CORPUS CHRISTI UNIVERSITY TO A FOUR YEAR INSTITUTION, CREATION OF A LAW SCHOOL AT TEXAS A & I, AND APPROPRIATE TRANSITION PROCEDURES. WHEREAS, public higher education in Corpus Christi and South Texas has been historically neglected in funding, programs, and facilities; and WHEREAS, the children of Corpus Christi and of South Texas deserve and have a fundamental right to public higher educational facilities and opportunities equal to those in every other area of the State; and WHEREAS, the young population of South Texas is growing rapidly, and its needs for higher educational opportunities are growing accordingly; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Corpus Christi and South Texas are entitled to have the economic, educational, and cultural benefits of first class public institutions of higher education in their community and area; and WHEREAS, Corpus Christi is the largest city in the United States without a four year university; and WHEREAS, a four year university is vital to Corpus Christi fulfilling its potential as an integral and productive part of the Texas economy; and WHEREAS, a four year university in Corpus Christi will complement the facilities at Texas A & I University and Del Mar College, and will enhance education within the area; and WHEREAS, a law school is needed at Texas A & I University to provide South Texas students with professional educational opportunities, and will provide the area with the multiple benefits of a professional institution which South Texas has been deprived of; and. WHEREAS, State taxpayers would receive great savings from location of a law school at Texas A & I because of existing facilities and a generous endowment offered by the King Ranch; and WHEREAS, the Texas A & M University System is one of the finest and most respected educational institutions in the nation; and WHEREAS, merger of the Texas A & M University System with the South Texas University System would enhance education in South Texas and statewide; and 208JB033. res 20593 1tCR0F tUgiER WHEREAS, Senate Bill 122 and House Bill 358 would merge Texas A & I, Corpus Christi State University, and Laredo State University into the Texas A & M System; would expand Corpus Christi State University to a four year institution; would create a law school at Texas A & I, and would appropriately protect existing programs at Texas A & I and Del Mar College; and WHEREAS, enactment of Senate Bill 122 or House Bill 358 into law this year i s , for Corpus Christi and South Texas, the overriding and most important issue facing the 71st Legislature; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That enactment of Senate Bill 122 or House Bill 358 into law this year shall be the paramount and overriding goal of the City of Corpus Christi during the 71st Legislature. SECTION 2. That the City of Corpus Christi respectfully, strongly, and urgently requests the 71st Texas Legislature enact Senate Bill 122 or House Bill 358.
