HomeMy WebLinkAbout020631 RES - 03/21/1989A RESOLUTION REQUESTING ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR THE PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE. WHEREAS, the Padre Island National Seashore is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Texas; and WHEREAS, visitation to the Padre Island National Seashore has steadily declined in recent years because of lack of maintenance and deteriorating facilities for visitors; and WHEREAS, a new visitor facility is under construction and will be completed in Spring of 1989; and WHEREAS, the operating budget for the Padre Island National Seashore does not include funding for staffing the new visitor facility; and WHEREAS, a plan is desperately needed for ongoing maintenance and improvement of the new visitor facility and other facilities in the Padre Island National Seashore; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the Director of the National Park Service and the Secretary of Interior are urgently requested to obtain supplemental funding in the current budget to allow for start up, staffing and operation of the new visitor facility, to prepare for the anticipated increase in number of visitors when the new visitor facility is completed in Spring of 1989, and to plan for adequate maintenance and improvement in the physical facilities in the Padre Island National Seashore. SECTION 2. That the City Secretary is directed to send copies of this resolution to the Director of the National Park Service, the Secretary of the Interior, Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Senator Phil Gramm, and Congressman Solomon Ortiz.
