SUPPORTING PASSAGE OF HB 718 AND SB 295 PROHIBITING OPEN
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTAINERS IN MOTOR VEHICLES.
WHEREAS, driving while intoxicated is a severe threat to the public
safety, causing death, serious bodily injury, and emotional and financial injury
to many individuals and families; and
WHEREAS, present law enforcement techniques are inadequate to prevent
DWI; and
WHEREAS, driving on public highways is a privilege subjecting drivers
to reasonable regulation to protect other travelers and the public generally;
and
WHEREAS, prohibiting open alcoholic beverage containers in motor
vehicles would reduce drunk driving, and would provide law enforcement officers
with a significant enforcement tool to prevent drunk driving;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That House Bill 718 and Senate Bill 295 prohibiting open
alcoholic beverage containers in motor vehicles should be enacted into law.
SECTION 2. That staff is directed to notify our legislators and
Governor of this Resolution.
