DIRECTING NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE NUECES COUNTY HOSPITAL
DISTRICT FOR PAYMENT OF THEIR SHARE OF THE COSTS FOR
OPERATION OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi
finds that the provision of ambulance service through the Emergency
Medical Service is a provision of basic services to the citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Nueces County Hospital District is responsible
for medical care to indigents; and
WHEREAS, many of the citizens utilizing the ambulance
service are indigent and unable to pay for that service; and
WHEREAS, a major factor, if not the most major factor in the
deficit in the ambulance service, results from the provision of
medical care and transportation to indigents; and
WHEREAS, Nueces County acting by and through the Nueces
County Hospital District has by contract with the City since 1973
borne its fair share of such medical care and transportation for
indigents; and
WHEREAS, the Hospital District has given notice that it will
contribute only $800,000 to the City for ambulance service for the
year ending July 31, 1990, but stop payments thereafter.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the Nueces County Hospital District enter
into a new contract with the City to resume funding provision of basic
medical care and transportation to indigents.
