Box 2910 Austin, TX 78769 Dear Speaker Lewis_ July 20, 1989 The City of Corpus Christi respectfully requests your consideration of the creation of an interim study committee to study Coastal beach cleanup and preservation of Texas Beaches. The proposed interim study has also been requested by the House Committee on Environmental Affairs through Chairman Saunders and by Representative Todd Hunter. The Coastal beaches of the State of Texas are one of the State's greatest tourist attractions and are one of the State's most ecologically sensitive areas. Over the years, a continuing increase in Gulf pollution has seriously impacted our Gulf beaches. Continued increases in beach utilization by both tourists and State residents have also impacted our beaches. During the past decade, the Corpus Christi City Council has taken an active role in support of beach cleanup and anti -pollution efforts such as vigorous lobbying for federal legislation against Gulf pollution. This proposed interim study could play an extremely important role in focusing the State's attention on one of our greatest natural resources and the severe problems facing that resource. The City Council passed a resolution in support of the interim study on Tuesday, July 18, 1989, and I pledge that should an interim study be undertaken, the City of Corpus Christi will work closely with the committee and provide assistance as required. I deeply appreciate your most kind and generous support in past efforts by the City of Corpus Christi and offer our appreciation for your attention to this request.
