HomeMy WebLinkAbout020824 RES - 11/07/1989A RESOLUTION PETITIONING THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON THE EDWARDS AQUIFER TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE A SYSTEM OF WATER PLANNING THAT INCLUDES ALL WATER USERS WITHIN A DESCRIBED REGION. WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi obtains one -hundred percent of its water for municipal and industrial purposes from the Nueces River Basin; and WHEREAS, the bay and estuarine system is dependent for its productivity on fresh water inflows from the Nueces River; and WHEREAS, the Edwards Aquifer receives over half its water from the Nueces River watershed, including the West Nueces River, the Leona River, the Frio River, the Sabinal River, and streams tributary thereto; and WHEREAS, more than half the water production of the watershed of the Nueces River flows into the Edwards Aquifer; and WHEREAS, within the region defined by the three aforementioned river basins, responsibility for water management is divided among three river authorities, a groundwater district split into two mutually antagonistic camps, two systems of water law, and numerous local governments; and WHEREAS, the aforementioned region is characterized by a limited amount of water and increasing competition among water users; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi does hereby petition the Select Committee on the Edwards Aquifer, established under House Concurrent Resolution Number 142, and by joint proclamation of the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House dated September 26, 1989, to support and promote a system of water planning that includes all water users within the aforementioned region. SECTION 2. That the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi does hereby urge the Select Committee on the Edwards Aquifer to reject any proposal for water management that does not take into account the needs of downstream water users.
