RESOLUTION
SUPPORTING PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION
INCREASING FINES FOR CLASS C MISDEMEANORS
WHEREAS, maximum fines for state law offenses for Class C misdemeanors
have been limited to $200 for many years;
WHEREAS, municipal courts have jurisdiction of such offenses, which include
public intoxication, disorderly conduct, simple assault, petty theft, driving without insurance,
and others;
WHEREAS, the present fine does not provide sufficient deterrence to Class
C offenses; and
WHEREAS, several bills have been introduced in the 72nd Texas Legislature
to increase Class C maximum fines to $500.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS
SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi supports legislation to increase
maximum Class C misdemeanor fines to $500.
SECTION 2. That the City Manager and staff are directed to advise all local
legislators and other pertinent officials of this resolution, and to take all steps necessary to
support bills increasing Class C misdemeanor maximum fines to $500, including House Bills
407 and 1954, and Senate Bills 8, 533, and 998.
