HomeMy WebLinkAbout021222 RES - 08/27/1991RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE APPLICATION OF THE CORPUS CHRISTI AREA CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU TO OBTAIN THE U.S.S. LEXINGTON TO BE USED AS A FLOATING NAVAL AVIATION MUSEUM WHEREAS, the U.S. Navy has announced its intentions to retire the U.S.S. Lexington as an active training aircraft carrier and make it available to be used as a floating naval aviation museum; and WHEREAS, the Corpus Christi Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (the "Bureau") is making a proposal to the U.S. Navy for the donation of the Lexington so that it can be relocated to a site in Corpus Christi Bay; and WHEREAS, the Lady Lex Museum on the Bay Association has engaged in a fund raising drive which has generated pledges totaling almost $1,500,000 to be used for relocation and berthing of the vessel in the event the Navy selects Corpus Christi Bay as the site for the Lexington; and WHEREAS, it is proposed to raise the additional $3,000,000 necessary for the project through the issuance of certificates of obligation which will be repayable from the Bureau's hotel/motel tax receipts under its contracts with the City; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: RESOLVED, that the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, endorses the application of the Corpus Christi Area Convention and Visitors Bureau to obtain the U.S.S. Lexington aircraft carrier to be used as a floating naval aviation museum in Corpus Christi Bay. RESOLVED, FURTHER, that upon the decision by the U.S. Navy to donate the U.S.S. Lexington to the Corpus Christi Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Corpus Christi, Texas, intends to initiate the necessary procedures under applicable state and federal laws to issue up to $3,000,000 in MICROFILMED 021222 U.S.S. LEXINGTON RESOLUTION Corpus Christi City Council August 27, 1991 certificates of obligation to be repayable from the hotel/motel tax receipts of the Bureau in accordance of the terms and conditions of its proposal.
