HomeMy WebLinkAbout021388 RES - 05/12/1992A RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE CORPUS CHRISTI AREA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION TO PREPARE AND SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TO LOCATE A FACILITY IN CORPUS CHRISTI, AND EXPRESSING THE CITY COUNCIL'S INTENT TO CALL AN ELECTION FOR VOTER CONSIDERATION OF A SALES TAX TO SUPPORT SUCH A PROPOSAL WHEREAS, creation of new jobs is of the highest priority for this City Council, and is essential to the health and welfare of Corpus Christi residents; and WHEREAS, Corpus Christi has been offered the opportunity to compete for a financing and accounting facility of the United States Department of Defense which would employ 4,000 persons at an average salary and benefits of $35,000; and WHEREAS, such a facility could benefit all citizens of Corpus Christi through increased employment opportunities, economic activity and tax base; and WHEREAS, State law provides Corpus Christi with the opportunity to invest in such a proposal with funds from a sales tax approved by the voters; and WHEREAS, a proposal should be developed on behalf of Corpus Christi, and the voters should be given the opportunity to vote on a sales tax to support such a proposal after considering its merits. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi Area Economic Development Corporation is hereby directed to prepare and submit a timely proposal on behalf of Corpus Christi to the Department of Defense. SECTION 2. That the City Council intends to call an election on the uniform election date in January 1993 for a voter decision whether to adopt a sales tax to support Corpus Christi's proposal to the Department of Defense, if Corpus Christi is still being considered by the Department at that time.
