HomeMy WebLinkAbout021570 RES - 02/16/1993A RESOLUTION OPPOSING EFFORTS BY THE STATE LEGISLATURE GEARED TOWARD PARTIALLY BALANCING THE STATE BUDGET BY INCREASING CURRENT STATE FEES OR BY CREATING NEW FEES FOR MUNICIPALITIES. WHEREAS, it is believed the state legislature may be considering plans to partially balance the state budget by increasing any of a wide variety of fees paid to the state by municipalities and may create new fees; and WHEREAS, the resulting revenues from increased or new fees would replace state general revenues that support certain agencies; and WHEREAS, in 1992, the City of Corpus Christi paid approximately $710,000 to the Texas Water Commission for mandated permit fees for water, wastewater and landfill operations; and WHEREAS, Corpus Christi residents cannot bear the burden of additional state - mandated increases in municipal fees which would result in higher utility rates and higher taxes. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council strongly opposes any efforts toward balancing the state budget by increasing current state fees to be paid by municipalities or by creating new fees to be paid by municipalities. SECTION 2. That the members of the Texas Legislature are urged to recognize that existing state fees mandated to be paid by municipalities generate an amount of revenue for the state far in excess of the reasonable costs of related services provided by the state to municipalities.
