HomeMy WebLinkAbout021582 RES - 03/09/1993y RESOLUTION RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, SUPPORTING CONTINUATION OF THE TEXAS MEXICAN RAILWAY COMPANY'S SERVICE. The Texas Mexican Railway Company (hereinafter called Tex Mex) executed an agreement with the United States Government (hereinafter called Government) in 1947 which authorized Tex Mex to operate on and maintain the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station branch line running from the Tex Mex tracks on Highway 44 to the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. The original agreement with extension runs through 1997. WHEREAS, Tex Mex provides valuable service to businesses in the City of Corpus Christi and the surrounding area by providing high quality railroad service connecting the Port of Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi Area through South Texas and into Mexico; and WHEREAS, Tex Mex continues to operate on a 3.07 mile section of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station branch line and has major customers on such active line segment; and WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi attempts to foster the best economic climate for business in the City and rail service plays a major role in the economic climate and especially for those businesses on the 3.07 active line; and WHEREAS, Tex Mex has given its assurance that it will execute an agreement with the Government to release the inactive portion of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station branch line concurrently with City Council action on this Resolution. NOW THEREFORE IN CONSIDERATION OF THE FOREGOING BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL: (1) The City Council of the City of Corpus Christi, unconditionally supports continued operation of the 3.07 mile active section of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station branch line by the Texas Mexican Railway Company through the end of its contract period with the Government; and (2) The City Council of the City of Corpus Christi requests that should the U. S. Government determine to sell its interest in the active segment of the line that the Government conduct an open and public bidding process and specifically state that the active segment of the line is encumbered with Tex Mex's operating rights; and (3) Should the U.S. Government sell its interest in the active segment of the line and Tex Mex be the successful bidder, the City of Corpus Christi will continue its support of Tex Mex operating on the active segment of the line in the future. Should Tex Mex not be the successful bidder, the City of Corpus Christi will remain neutral.
