OPPOSING PROPOSED BTU TAX
WHEREAS, the United States has lost 450,000 energy-
related jobs in the past ten years, 170,000 of which were from
Texas; and
WHEREAS, a total of 9,000 industrial jobs in the Corpus
Christi area would be put at risk should energy-related industries
be put at further peril; and
WHEREAS, 72,000 additional jobs in the Corpus Christi
area are related to these basic industrial jobs; and
WHEREAS, a new BTU tax proposed by the administration in
Washington would affect adversely all energy-related industries
including those in the Corpus Christi area; and
WHEREAS, this tax is clearly discriminatory by its
provisions which will more than double the impact of the proposed
taxes in the Corpus Christi area as compared to other parts of the
nation; and
WHEREAS, in addition, the establishment of the BTU tax
would increase the Federal Deficit by $937 billion dollars.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi opposes the
establishment of the proposed BTU tax.
SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall be transmitted to
Texas Senators Phil Gramm and Bob Krueger, to the Treasury
Secretary of the United States Lloyd Bentsen, President Bill
Clinton, and to other interested officials.
