HomeMy WebLinkAbout021664 RES - 06/01/1993A RESOLUTION OPPOSING PROPOSED BTU TAX WHEREAS, the United States has lost 450,000 energy- related jobs in the past ten years, 170,000 of which were from Texas; and WHEREAS, a total of 9,000 industrial jobs in the Corpus Christi area would be put at risk should energy-related industries be put at further peril; and WHEREAS, 72,000 additional jobs in the Corpus Christi area are related to these basic industrial jobs; and WHEREAS, a new BTU tax proposed by the administration in Washington would affect adversely all energy-related industries including those in the Corpus Christi area; and WHEREAS, this tax is clearly discriminatory by its provisions which will more than double the impact of the proposed taxes in the Corpus Christi area as compared to other parts of the nation; and WHEREAS, in addition, the establishment of the BTU tax would increase the Federal Deficit by $937 billion dollars. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi opposes the establishment of the proposed BTU tax. SECTION 2. That this Resolution shall be transmitted to Texas Senators Phil Gramm and Bob Krueger, to the Treasury Secretary of the United States Lloyd Bentsen, President Bill Clinton, and to other interested officials.
