HomeMy WebLinkAbout021736 RES - 08/24/1993A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE CITY'S DESIRE TO HOST THE 1996 TEXAS MUNICIPAL LEAGUE ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION; AND PROVIDING RESOURCES TO HOST THE SAME. WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi was honored to host the Texas Municipal League Annual Conference and Exhibition in 1990, and said conference was a total success; and WHEREAS, the Texas Municipal League's rotation schedule offers Corpus Christi the opportunity to again host the Annual Conference and Exhibition in 1996; and WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi must submit a resolution and proposal to the Texas Municipal League Board of Directors to secure the 1996 Texas Municipal League Annual Conference and Exhibition; and WHEREAS, the estimated economic impact of the TML Annual Conference and Exhibition to the host city exceeds $3,000,000; for the last five years conference attendance has averaged 2,251 delegates, 629 spouses, and 892 exhibitors; and WHEREAS, by hosting the 1996 Texas Municipal League Annual Conference and Exhibition, the resulting exposure to the 3,500 plus conference attendees, including more than 2,000 elected and appointed officials from throughout the State of Texas, should result in increased conferences and meetings, as well as personal vacation destinations to the City of Corpus Christi; and WHEREAS, the hosting of the 1996 Texas Municipal League Annual Conference and Exhibition will provide and enhance employment and economic activity in this area; and WHEREAS, in order to secure the 1996 conference, the City will need to offer through its proposal the following incentives to the Texas Municipal League: AG5000.398.ajr 1. Provision of a host city information booth and the hosting of a closing social function at the 1995 TML Annual Conference in Dallas, at an estimated expense of $20,000. 2. 1996 expenses (which include transportation, hosting a welcoming event, free use of the Convention Center facilities from November 11, 1996, through November 17, 1996, facility tours, and the host city information center) are estimated to be $69,250 with estimated conference revenues of $41,400. 021736 taiefOILMED 2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City of Corpus Christi, Texas wishes to express its strong desire to host the 1996 Texas Municipal League Annual Conference and Exhibition and is committed to ensuring that the conference is a success. SECTION 2. That the City Manager is hereby authorized to provide for a host city information booth and the hosting of a closing social function at the 1995 TML Annual Conference in Dallas, the estimated expense being $20,000; and budget in coordination with the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau for the 1996 expenses and revenues (which include transportation, hosting a welcoming event, free use of the Convention Center facilities from November 11 - 17, 1996, facility tours, and the host city information center) which have been estimated to be $69,250; all subject to appropriations, upon acceptance of the City's proposal for the 199n Texas Municipal League Annual Conference and Exhibition.
