COMMENDING THE LEADERSHIP OF CONGRESSMAN SOLOMON ORTIZ AND
STAFF AND INDIVIDUALS FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, MINORITY
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AGENCY REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A
MINORITY BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY COMMITTEE PROGRAM IN CORPUS CHRISTI.
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency manages
the Minority Business Opportunity Committee Program in twelve cities throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, in cooperation with Congressman Solomon Ortiz's office, the U.S. Department of
Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency, through Mr. Gilbert Colon, Acting Director for the U.S.
Department of Commerce MBDA, Mr. Raul Quiros, Chief, Public Sector Division, Office of Program
Development, U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency and
Stephen J. Boykin, Senior Business Development Specialist, U.S. Department of Commerce Minority
Business Development Section, contacted the City of Corpus Christi to develop an interagency agreement
to establish a Minority Business Opportunity Committee within the City of Corpus Christi;
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi finds that it is in the best interest of the City, its business
community, and its citizens to actively pursue the increase of business opportunities to minority
businesses to provide for more efficient coordination of federal, state, and local resources for minority
business development, to provide greater access by minority businesses to money, management markets
and to actively create dialogue between minority and majority interested and effective parties concerning
minority business opportunities.
WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency and the
City of Corpus Christi will be entering into an agreement to establish a Minority Business Opportunity
Committee in the City of Corpus Christi to pursue these objectives.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Corpus Christi extends its commendation
to Representative Solomon Ortiz and his office, Mr. Gilbert Colon, Mr. Raul Quiros, and Mr. Stephen
Boykin of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency for their initiative
and leadership in working with the City of Corpus Christi to establish a Minority Business Opportunity
Committee within the City of Corpus Christi and that the Minority Business Opportunity Committee will
serve as a local organization dedicated to the planning, coordination, and delivery of available resources
for the maximum practical participation of the local minority business sector in the economic fife of Corpus
Christi.
