OPPOSING A PROPOSED $8.9 MILLION REDUCTION IN USDA FUNDS FOR
ELDERLY MEALS
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas through
the Senior Community Services Division of the Park and Recreation
Department, operates an elderly meals program which provides
approximately 4,750 meals to the elderly weekly; and
WHEREAS, the USDA funds provide 68% of the total food budget for
the City's elderly meals program; and
WHEREAS, any cut in USDA funds for elderly meals will result in a
cut to funds provided to the City of Corpus Christi and lessen the
City's ability to meet the needs of its elderly citizens; and
WHEREAS, the elderly population in Corpus Christi, Texas includes
many at or below poverty level; and
WHEREAS, providing one nutritionally balanced
many elderly citizens to remain independent and
expensive nursing home care.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY
CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1: That the City Council of

appreciates the hard choices which must be made by these committee
members and thanks them for their strong commitment to provide
meals to the elderly which enables many elderly in corpus Christi,
Texas to remain independent.
SECTION 3: That the City Secretary is hereby directed to
send copies of this Resolution to U.S. Representative Solomon P.
Ortiz, U.S. Senator Phil Gramm; U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson;
and members of cognizant committees of the U.S. Senate and House of
Representatives.
