HomeMy WebLinkAbout022079 RES - 11/01/1994A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE COLUMBUS FLEET TASK FORCE AND EXPRESSING THE INTENTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI TO ADOPT ALL MEASURES NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE TASK FORCE RECOMMENDATIONS WHEREAS, in 1993, as a result of the diligent efforts of many community -minded citizens and after competition with other cities, the government of Spain selected Corpus Christi as the permanent location of the three Columbus ship replicas constructed in connection with the Quincentenary celebration; and WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi supported the efforts of the Las Carabelas Columbus Fleet Association by approving a Support Services Agreement and a Lease Agreement with the Association; and WHEREAS, the Columbus Ships serve as a focus of Corpus Christi's Spanish cultural heritage and as a major tourist attraction; and WHEREAS, the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History has procured rights to the Smithsonian Institution's Seeds of Change exhibit, which naturally complements display of the Columbus Ships; and WHEREAS, difficulties have occurred which have prevented realization of the full potential of the Columbus Ships to celebrate the Corpus Christi area's cultural heritage and to enhance the area as a major tourist center; and WHEREAS, on October 25, 1994, the Columbus Fleet Task Force presented to the City Council recommendations for a new partnership between the City of Corpus Christi, the Columbus Fleet Association, and Spain '92 which includes expansion of the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History to display the Seeds of Change exhibit, infrastructure to display the Columbus Ships adjacent to the Museum in conjunction with the Seeds of Change exhibit, reorganization of the management of the Columbus Ships, and funding projected from revenues generated by attracting 175,000 visitors per year backed by pledge from the Corpus Christi Bay Area Business Alliance and obligations of the City; and WHEREAS, the recommendations of the Columbus Fleet Task Force provide a sound and innovative solution which will benefit the Corpus Christi community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the City Council endorses the recommendations of the Columbus Fleet Task Force. That the City Council expresses its intention to adopt all measures necessary to implement the Task Force recommendations and directs Staff to prepare all necessary implementation actions. SECTION 3. That the City Council expresses its gratitude and that of the community to the Task Force for its diligent efforts and all the volunteers that have worked since 1992 which led to its recommendations.
