REQUESTING The Texas Transportation Commission take the appropriate action to
remove that portion of Interstate Highway 37 from Mesquite Street to Shoreline Boulevard
from the federal and state highway systems and that the land be conveyed to the City of
Corpus Christi by the appropriate means.
WHEREAS, in October, 1955, the City of Corpus Christi and the State of Texas (acting
through the State Highway Commissiorj, entered into a Municipal Construction and
Maintenance Agreement relating to the construction of a freeway from Shoreline Boulevard
to US Highway 181; and
WHEREAS, the agreement obligated the City to provide and procure the right-of-way to
the State for the improvements and City fulfilled said obligation; and
WHEREAS, City and State in December, 1957, entered into a Supplemental Agreement
for the construction, operation, and maintenance of parking facilities within the freeway
right-of-way, said facilities currently being in existence; and
WHEREAS, the three block section of Interstate Highway 37 between Shoreline Boulevard
and Mesquite Street is not an integral part of the Interstate Highway System nor does it
provide connectivity to other portions of the State or Federal Highway Systems and
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi desires to reconfigure the roadways and parking
areas within the three block area to more effectively utilize the area, and in particular to
develop a landscaped gateway entrance to the City and to locate a new federal courthouse
in a portion of this area.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it Resolved that the City of Corpus Christi hereby requests the
Texas Transportation Commission take the appropriate actions to remove that portion of
Interstate Highway 37 from Mesquite Street to Shoreline Boulevard be removed from the
federal and state highway systems and that the land be conveyed to the City of Corpus
Christi.
