HomeMy WebLinkAbout022489 RES - 02/14/1996RESOLUTION URGING CONGRESS TO PASS LEGISLATION TO REAUTHORIZE THE AIRPORT IMPROVEMENT GRANT PROGRAM BEGINNING IN FY 1997 AND RESTORE GRANTS IN AID FUNDING TO AT LEAST $1.7 BILLION TO MEET INFRASTRUCTURE CAPACITY NEEDS OF THE NATION'S AIRPORTS. WHEREAS, The public airports, small and large, provide the land basis for the air transportation system of the nation; and WHEREAS, The air transportation system is one of the primary linchpins of the local and national economies; and WHEREAS, It is essential the safety and capacity needs of the air transportation system are met to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, both domestically and internationally, and WHEREAS, Continually improving and upgrading the aviation infrastructure is critical to provide the facilities that the passengers, airlines, general aviation, corporate aviation, cargo movers, and military users need now and in the future; and WHEREAS, The Aviation Trust Fund was established to provide the necessary capital through collection of user fees to pay for the infrastructure of the public airports; and WHEREAS, The Airport Improvement Program returns the airport user fees collected back to all public airports, through grants in aid; and WHEREAS, Without the Airport Improvement Program and the resulting grants in aid, the Airports will be unable to meet the safety and capacity needs of the air transportation system of our nation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Congress is urged to pass legislation which will Reauthorize the Airport Improvement Grant Program beginning in FY 1997 and restore grants in aid funding through the Airport Improvement Program to the level of at least $1.7 billion to meet capacity infrastructure needs of the nation's air transportation system of public airports.
